Shadow Brightening
Shadow Brightening is a special effect that selectively brightens only the dark parts of an image. When shooting a scene with a large dynamic range (e.g. an object against a bright sky), it can often happen that there is no way to properly expose the darker part of the photograph, which thus remains too dark and short on detail. Using the Shadow Brightening function will brighten the dark areas; meanwhile, the bright ones, e.g. the sky, will remain unaffected and the photograph’s brightness will be better balanced overall. Because this has a function similar to a classical flash, this function is sometimes called a digital flash.
The tool can also do the opposite enhancement - a “digital shade”, that is, selective darkening of a photo’s brightest parts.
